The infrastructure will provide low-power, low-bandwidth but long-range connectivity needed by users including government organizations, research institutions and businesses.

Thinxtra, the exclusive operator of Sigfox in HongKong, Australia and New Zealand, is set to launch its network of low-power wide-area (LPWA) infrastructure in a bid to help the territory fulfil its potential as a global hub for the Internet of Thing (IoT). Sigfox is the most mature LPWA network in the world. It is also the first fully dedicated global cellular network.

IoT is already considered a game changer worldwide. The installation of an open territory LPWA network, which is connected to the network of Sigfox in 36 countries, is expected to improve HongKong’s IoT connectivity.

Sigfox’s exclusive Hong Kong network operator Thinxtra launched today to support the growth of an Internet of Things (IoT) research and development ecosystem for Hong Kong, providing cost-effective IoT connectivity via an open territory-wide low-power wide-area (LPWA) network that connects to Sigfox networks in 36 other countries around the world.

“With strong government support for the growth of the IoT and smart city industries, Hong Kong has the potential to be a leader in the global IoT revolution. A thriving innovation and incubation environment and a cost-effective LPWA network are essential to making this vision a reality,” Thinxtra CEO Loic Barancourt said.

Thinxtra is set to deploy antennas and around 100 base stations in strategic locations within the territory by June 2018 to prepare for the official launch of the LPWA network. The infrastructure will provide low-power, low-bandwidth but long-range connectivity needed by users including government organizations, research institutions and businesses.

The first antennas and base stations in HongKong were installed August at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP). These allowed the creation of an open IoT network for the research and development of IoT by the Park’s tenants.
