KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Australian start-up Power Ledger has qualified as one of the three finalists for XTC, Extreme Tech Challenge, and is scheduled to make its final presentation to Sir Richard Branson.
  • Dr Jemma Green, co-founder of Power Ledger, recounted her experience of the first two rounds and is apprehensive about the final round which she hopes will go in the start-up’s favour.
  • Necker Island, owned by Dr Richard Branson and nestled among the British Virgin Islands, is the venue where the finals will be held after the completion of reconstruction following the two hurricanes.

Having made it to the final round of Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC), a pitch competition held in Las Vegas, Australian blockchain start-up Power Ledger is scheduled to make its presentation to Sir Richard Branson.

There are two other start-up companies in the fray, one of which is a healthcare venture named Owlet and the other is a crowdfunded venture dealing in smart cameras named Revl. While there is no cash prize involved, an unspoken fact remains that the winner would receive a significant boost moving forward.

Power Ledger owes its existence to Dr Jemma Green, Perth’s deputy Lord Mayor, and depends on Bill Tai, co-founder of Extreme Tech Challenge for advice. To reach the finals, the company had to clear the first round at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) followed by semi-finals wherein it had to prove itself against nine other participants. Dr Green recounted the experience as being nerve-wracking, explaining how difficult it was to showcase the platform effectively within a time-frame of five minutes in front of an audience and a panel of judges.

The final round of the challenge is to be held in one of the pockets of the British Virgin Islands, namely Necker Island, which belongs to Sir Richard Branson. Owing to having been ravaged by two hurricanes, Irma followed by Maria, the island in undergoing reconstruction and this has meant re-scheduling of the final round.

Dr Green, who is familiar with the island owing to an earlier visit, hopes that the exposure will help Power Ledger to successfully fulfil its forthcoming milestones and achieve much more in future.
