Mega-funds Take a Punt on Venture Capital

Over 27 years in Silicon Valley as a marketing executive, entrepreneur and venture capitalist, Deepak Natarajan saw his fair share of sharemarket turmoil.

So now as the Singapore-based director of Intel Capital, the division of the giant Intel set up to manage venture capital, global investment, mergers and acquisitions, Natarajan reckons a period of market volatility should be no bar to taking a good idea to the world.
“There is a cliche term that I have heard many times: that some of the best companies get started during recessions. If you have a great idea, there is no need to wait for the market to turn up to start executing it,” Natarajan says. “All you have to live with is the possibility that an investor might bid a bit less for your company than you think it is worth. But it is worth nothing till it is built.”
It was sage advice for the hundreds of Southeast Asia’s best and brightest tech stars who assembled in Kuala Lumpur this week for digital conference, Wild Digital. The conference is the brainchild of the Kuala Lumpur-based Catcha Group, a company run by Patrick Grove, the Sydney University-educated entrepreneur who debuted on this year’s BRW Rich with a $286 million fortune.
