Collins St Asset Management challenges the status quo, preserves capital and maximises the alignment of interests with investors in the pursuit of superior medium to long-term returns.
Through patience, objectivity and freedom, the Collins St Value Fund has delivered ~20% p.a. gross returns since inception four years ago, with a $250,000 investment at that time now worth over $437,000 today.
Problem
93.23% of Australian equity ‘general’ funds failed to beat the index in FY 2019, despite charging investors an average of 1% p.a., or $10,000 for every $1m invested. This chronic underperformance can be attributed to ‘index hugging’ portfolio construction, excessive funds under management and misaligned incentive schemes that can see fees being paid even when wealth is being destroyed.
Opportunity
The Collins St Value Fund holds a highly concentrated portfolio of ~20 deeply researched uranium, gold, pharmaceutical and financial services ASX listed stocks (amongst others). Contrarian by nature, ‘value’ by style, the Fund is entirely benchmark unaware, can take advantage of ‘alternative investments’ and ‘special situations’ often beyond the reach of individual investors, and does not charge fixed management fees.
Competitive Advantage
Deep C-Suite level relationships across corporate Australia (mainstream and emerging sectors) that open doors to new ideas and bespoke transactional opportunities (i.e. convertible notes) beyond the reach of most private investors. Funds under management capacity of ~$350m – ~$450m provides flexibility to pursue niche investment opportunities and generate superior medium to longer term returns. No fixed management fees, aligned management.
Team
Run ‘by investors for investors’, the three person Investment team all have experience building and managing private companies in their own right. Such hands on experience, combined with extensive qualifications in finance and related disciplines, provide a refreshingly pragmatic approach to stock research and portfolio management. Collins St Asset Management has no external shareholders and is a stable, profitable business.
Performance
~20% p.a. gross returns since February 2016 have seen the Fund consistently ranked in the top quintile of Australian equity managers as measured by multiple independent research companies. A $250,000 investment at inception with distributions reinvested would be worth over $437,000 in the hands of the investor as at 31 January 2020. Achieved with a conservative ~20% average cash holding.
Target
Available exclusively to wholesale investors, the Collins St Value Fund may be suitable for private investors, SMSFs, family trusts, philanthropic foundations and private investment companies looking to invest (or build an investment over time) of $250,000. The Fund offers monthly pricing and pays distributions on an annual basis. Applications and redemptions are also processed at the end of each month.
