KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • First Graphene, an Australian-based company, commenced commercial production of graphene at its new facility in Henderson that is spread over 960 square meters.
  • This is being viewed as a major milestone in the graphene industry as this particular allotrope of carbon can be integrated into various applications owing to its versatility and ability to conduct heat and electricity.
  • In an industry that faces obstacles in terms of quality, capacity and pricing, this development is likely to overcome the current problems and facilitate progress beyond its embryonic stage which it is currently in.

Australia-based advanced material unit First Graphene (ASX: FGR) commenced production at its commercial facility located at Henderson in Western Australia. In addition to being an important milestone for the company, it is also a significant development for the graphene industry since it implies production of high-quality graphene products.

With the intention of producing graphene in bulk, First Graphene leased premises in a Henderson facility named Australian Marin Complex and also acquired approval from the relevant authorities to commence work as soon as the construction was over. Spread over 960 square meters, the production facility had been inaugurated on 23rd November 2017, and operations began early in 2018 with the first shipment heading out to the US.

Development of this factory is regarded as being an important milestone in the graphene industry because it seemingly takes care of the obstacles faced by the industry. Currently, the graphene segment is facing obstacles in areas of quality, pricing and capacity, all of which are likely to be resolved once this production unit begins full-fledged operations.

An allotrope of carbon, the two-dimensional graphene is not just versatile but also lightest, strongest and a good conductor of heat and electricity. Not only can it be integrated into a wide range of existing applications but is also likely to redefine the energy storage segment. On its part, First Graphene has spent about three years to develop its technology and establish supply lines and is well poised to meet the 60% annual growth that this embryonic market is likely to experience over the coming months and years.
