A NOVEL TREATMENT that leaves a polyamide (PA) fabric flameretardant (FR) can simultaneously make the textile repellent to both oil and water, claims its developer, Alexium International Group of Perth, Australia.
The FR part of the treatment works by applying a thin coating to the fabric that forms a nanocomposite char shield when exposed to fire. This char-forming layer also inhibits dripping or melting of the PA fabric. At the same time, a fluorocarbon treatment can also be applied that provides repellence to oil and water. The combined lightweight coating leaves the fabric breathable.
