KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Millions of iPhone users worldwide will not be able to make use of augmented reality through their smartphones with Holo ARKit.
  • Holo with ARkit has made available to consumers worldwide the first augmented reality app that will allow phone users to create photos and videos using 3D holograms.
  • Virtual reality software company 8i has successfully collaborated with Sony Pictures for the use of holograms in the promotion of the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.

Millions of consumers can now experience true volumetric video on their iPhone with the launch of Holo with ARKit. It is the first augmented reality (AR) app that allows users not only to create videos and photos but place 3D holograms in them as well.

Over three million holograms of real animals and people have been placed by users all over the world since Holo was launched in June. The idea to use Holo was initially hatched after 8i’s partnership with Google for Tango over a year ago.

8i, which was founded in Wellington, New Zealand, is a virtual reality software company that focused on volumetric human capture. It has since expanded its operations to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

As it played with the app’s earlier versions, 8i found out the vast opportunities available for mobile augmented reality applications given the consumers’ proclivity for creating and sharing content through their smartphones. With Holo ARkit, 8i provided users with a new way to create content with virtual performances of the personalities they love.

8i has released new holograms that will be exclusively available on the iPhone. Included in the new collection are Glee star and dancer Harry Shum Jr., World Cup-winning defender Jerome Boateng, R&B artist Jhené Aiko, and even astronaut Buzz Aldrin. They also included new animals such as the alpaca, fox and the porcupine among others.

8i is known for its collaboration with Sony Pictures which allowed fans of the hit movie Spiderman: Homecoming to create their own mini augmented reality movies with the webbed superhero. It also partnered with Viacom Velocity for the release of a Moon person hologram collection in time for the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards. This was the first time that a televised tentpole event was promoted with the use of a Holo.
